SSRS error HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Unable to connect to SSRS via SSMS or via URL/Browser. Reporting Services gives this error SSRS error HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Error in SSMS
Unable to connect to the server at SERVERNAME. The specified URL might not be valid or there might be a problem with the report server version or configuration

Error in SSRS logs
e ERROR: Failed to register url=https://:445/ReportServer/ for endpoint 2, error=20.

How to resolve this error
After hours of research and trying different things this was eventually solved by

1./ Removing all the urls for webservice and report manager url in Reporting Services Configuration Manager.

2./ Manually editing the rsreportserver.config file and removing any entries between the [url] tags (there were some
not being cleaned up properly )

3./ Restarting the SSRS service, and readding the URL’s with a fresh port number ( I had already tried changing
port numbers earlier with no success)

This solved the issue.

Please note IIS also existed on this server.

Let me know if this helps you!

  1. After a bit of research, I’ve noticed it using ‘netsh http’ was able to answer me something. I managed to see why my reporting services keep complaining requested url is already reserved.

I managed to delete them using the netsh command. After deleting the URLs from HTTPSys cache, I was able to fire up default reporting service urls.

I later found that httpconfig.exe tool is very hand which is GUI of getsh command tool.

    Hope this helps…

  2. Thank you!!!! After hours of research, solutions including update config and keep both ReportWebService and ReportManager URL same Virtural Directory name to ensuring port 80 only is specified in Firewall, etc, etc. This one, after a little waiting and patience and following what you recommended specifcally, Report Manager FINALLY came up, voila. OMG, this has been months of server Report Manager “HTTP 503” errors. Thanks!!!
